As reported by Reuters on Sunday (25/7/2021) Thailand reported 15,335 new daily cases, bringing the country's cumulative cases to 497,302. Meanwhile, Thailand also reported 129 new deaths, bringing the total deaths to 4,059.

On Friday (23/7), Bangkok has also closed parks and several other public places in response to the surge in COVID-19 cases. Restrictions on public mobility are known to have occurred after the excitement of the discovery of COVID-19 victims dead on the streets of Bangkok.

At that time, officials were asked by the Prime Minister to find a way to bring COVID-19 patients to the hospital so that a similar incident did not occur.

Previously, the head of Thailand's National Vaccine Institute, Nakorn Premsri, apologized to the Thai people for the slow pace of Corona vaccination. He also announced that Thailand joined the United Nations (UN)-backed United Nations (UN) Corona vaccine sharing program, COVAX.

"I apologize to the people that the National Vaccine Institute has not managed to get a sufficient number of vaccines feasible for the current situation, despite our best efforts," Nakorn said at a press conference on Wednesday (21/7) local time.

"Mutation (of the virus) is something that can not be predicted, which triggers the spread faster than last year. Vaccine procurement efforts are not in accordance with the current situation," he added.

He said Thailand is in the process of joining COVAX, and is expected to start receiving vaccine supplies through the global program in the first quarter of 2022.

Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that has not joined the COVAX program. In February, the Thai authorities argued that their country was categorized as a middle-income country so they would not receive free or low-cost vaccine supplies from the program.

Thailand plans to inject 100 million doses of the Corona vaccine this year and has ordered 105.5 million doses from a number of vaccine manufacturers. The number consists of 61 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine produced by Siam Bioscience -- a company owned by Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn, then 19.5 million doses of Sinovac vaccine, then 20 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and 5 million doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Last week, new doubts arose after it was revealed that Siam Bioscience might not be able to deliver the vaccine supply on target until May 2022 due to production problems.

So far, Thailand is known to have injected 14.8 million doses of the Corona vaccine. Around 11.3 million Thais, or 16 percent of the total 69 million population, are reported to have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
